Concrete Industry Placed on EPA Priority List for 2008

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Office of Enforcement and Compliance Assurance (OECA) has issued its national enforcement priorities for 2008-10 and has identified stormwater problems from aggregates operations and ready mixed concrete plants as one of OECA’s three main focuses for storm water enforcement.

The others include homebuilding construction and big box store construction. According to EPA, many construction and aggregate companies operate nationwide in multiple states, and EPA has the ability to take enforcement actions that address these companies on a national basis, according to the report. The government agency also says that it has the ability to provide consistent and widespread compliance assistance to these sectors.

National Cement’s Commitment to Nature Showcased in Business Alabama

In the February 2008 Edition of Business Alabama, the magazine showcases the creation of a new wildlife sanctuary to be called “Blue Springs Nature Preserve.” The preserve grew out of the idea of having a place where Ragland School Children could learn about the environment. The wildlife sanctuary is being created on land sold to St. Clair County by National Cement Company. Following the sale, National Cement Company took the proceeds and started a 501 (C)(3) corporation to provide seed money to fund construction of the new preserve.

Although the preserve is still in its early stages, when complete, the park will feature a visitor center, arboretum, a cultural preserve, education center and classrooms, and a network of trails for visitors to view the land.
