ACIA Awards 2008 Top Block

On January 31, 2008, the ACIA awarded its 2008 Top Block Award to Krumdieck A+1 for their design of the Eastwood Village Shopping Center. The award was presented during the American Institute of Architects’ Gala Award Event at the Birmingham Country Club. The award honors the best project constructed of concrete masonry units during the previous year. Consideration is given to innovative use of concrete products, eye appeal, and workmanship.

This year’s winning project was unique in that it featured multiple buildings instead of the typical single project. The anchors of the shopping center are Wal-Mart and Old Navy. The shopping center was selected based on its innovative use of half high masonry design and single wythe wall construction. The project required two general contractors, and considerable coordination to insure timely completion. The winning firms were presented with the traditional Top Block Trophy and framed photos of the project.

In addition to Krumdieck A+1, the association honored Charles Vinzant Construction, Nearen Construction, and Block USA for the part in the project. Representing the architectural firm was Alex and Jeannie Krumdieck and Chad and Haynes Bryant. Will Ross was in attendance for Nearen Construction. Block USA was represented by Major Ogilvie, Keith and Gay McCormick, Bob and Helen Smith, and David and Carey Annedstedt.

The event was attended by over 180 members of the AIA and guests.
