Association Honors Concrete Furniture Designers
Every year students in the College of Architecture, Design and Construction look forward to the arrival of the Concrete Furniture project. Students in the Structures III class comprising of BSCI and ARCH students must work together in groups to create a piece of furniture that is either totally made of concrete or that utilizes concrete in the majority of the project. The parameters of this project have been expanded over the years and the projects have become more and more challenging and adventurous. Each year the quality of work and difficulty of formwork increases and this year’s group of projects proved to be no less. This year’s projects ranged from a glass-top concrete base drafting table, a poker table, a foosball table, a cannon, a bird bath, a fire pit, and various indoor tables with extremely difficult formwork. This year was unique in that there was a cash prize for the best project. The Alabama Concrete Industries Association (ACIA) donated $600 to the contest. A panel of judges picked the top project from each of the three Structures III professors’ classes and then ranked them first, second and third overall. The first place winner was the Cloth Table from Peter Weiss’s class with group members Michael Claborn, David Green, and Kevin Strange. Second place was the Wave Table from Steve Williams’s class with group members Sara Richter, Justin Smith, Ben Shaver, Cody Corley, Terran Wilson, Brett Jones, and David Doty. Third place was the AU Bird Bath from Michael Hein’s class with group members Michael Carpenter, Andrew McAlister, Hunter Sizemore, John Higginbotham, and Won Jung. Congratulations to all the winners in this competition and a special thanks to the ACIA for their donation to this great learning experience.
